Description

The second Gualicho on Deviantart to my knowledge, this dinosaur was just officially described today, and although it may look like a tyrannosaurid because of the short, two fingered arms it is in fact an allosaurid, showing that the same arm proportions evolved convergently in two different theropod clades. It was found in Argentina and is around 90 million years old. This is an absolutely amazing find, as it shows that beyond tyrannosaurids and abelisaurids another major group of apex predators was reducing the size of their arms in favor of a more efficient bite. I've always been a fan of the theory that allosaurids used their heads like giant deadly axes, so maybe this genus took that to the extreme...

Edit: There has been some debate as to Gualichos exact position in the theropod family tree, along with some thinking it may be synonymous with a number of existing genera. Because the holotype remains are so fragmentary it's hard to tell, but it could be a neovenatorid or a megaraptoran (depending on what megaraptorans actually are, I personally think they're likely to be tyrannosauroids) I guess time will tell...

Based on the evidence from analysis of Gualicho, it seems Megaraptora is a clade of basal coelurosaurs.
